Protein Shakes: Should I Drink Them?

My Shake at Wichita Nutrition: Such Great Service

Not a Nutritionist

I just want to state first off that I am not a nutritionist. I researched shakes  some when I was dieting, and I honestly don’t remember most of the information. I know that some types are better for you than others obviously and some are more natural. Quality does matter for protein shakes, just like most foods.

I Prefer Whole Foods

I don’t usually drink them anymore because I have learned that I personally prefer whole foods. Not to say that I won’t drink a protein shake every once in a while though and if you like them that is fine! I am not against them. There are definitely worse things you could be having.

How My Body Feels

I know protein builds muscle. I don’t feel like I personally need to build a lot of muscle for strength though or lose a lot of fat. I am not trying to gain a lot of muscle or bulk. I try my best not to pay attention to how my body looks, but rather how it feels. I try to obtain this by eating balanced meals, and working out to feel good. In addition, the protein upsets my stomach as well, which doesn’t make my body want to perform.

Shake As a Snack

I do like to have a protein shake every once in while, like the other day when I decided to shake up my routine of whole foods and try out a local spot. I would rather have a shake as a snack though, and not a meal replacement. Mentally, it is a drink, and I can’t get past that a drink is not a meal. I just feel more satisfied when I eat whole foods and balance my plate. I know it is mostly in my head but that is how I see it. I know many people are fine with it being a meal replacement.

Vary Your Diet

It can be a convenient source of nutrients for people on the go. I understand that. If they work for you, then that is wonderful. My word of advice I guess though is try to still vary your diet and get a quality protein. I don’t think having a shake every day is a good thing, just like I have had to struggle not to eat oatmeal every day. I do like oatmeal, but I understand that I need to vary my diet.

So drink your protein shake and enjoy all the benefits, but just keep in mind that a balanced life is a happy, healthy life.

Wichita Friends

If you live in or around Wichita and want a protein shake instead of a fast food joint, I would suggest going to Wichita Nutrition and giving them a try. I stopped in the other day after hot yoga, and I was treated so well. Another reason to support local business owners is they give you the time and care that corporate businesses do not. It was such a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. I was treated to three drinks. I was able to try Aloe water… which is seriously amazing and has great health benefits! I  had Chai tea…. also very good. Then, I had the Nutter Butter Protein Shake. It tasted similar to a Nutter Butter, but not near as sweet. I don’t like overly sweet drinks because they start to make me feel sick, even if I enjoy them. (I try to drink a small size if I get a sugary drink!) I would like to go back and try some more flavors when I am on the go and looking for something with a lot of nutrients!

What do you think of protein shakes?

Sharing Pizza at Piattos

Eating Local

After Hot Asana’s amazing paddle board yoga class, my sister-in-law and I were pretty hungry so we decided we wanted to try somewhere new that was local! We are both horrible decision makers when it comes to trying to pick somewhere to eat, so it usually takes us a while. After naming lots of places that we could go, we finally decided on Piatto’s Neapolitan Pizzeria.

Too Much or Too Little

Before I ever started dieting, I would usually eat way too much pizza because I loved it and thought it was so good. Once I started dieting, pizza was a food that I pretty much swore off. If I was at an event where I was expected to eat it, I was usually upset. I would only eat one piece no matter how hungry I was. I just thought of it as a food that was off limits if I wanted a lean body.

Sharing Strategy

I will eat pizza now, but I still get a little anxious about getting it or eating too much because I still think of it as an unhealthy food sometimes. When my sister-in-law and I went to Piattos, we decided that we wanted to share an appetizer and share a pizza.  Depending on what you order, this can be a good strategy to save money, eat a little healthier, and not overeat. Just the meal is enough to share a lot of times!

Our Meal

We shared a light appetizer, Caprese, which was sliced tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil.

They had two types of sauces for their pizzas; they had red sauce pizzas and white sauce pizzas. The red sauce was of course the typical tomato sauce. The white sauce pizzas were not your traditional white heavy creamy sauce though, they used olio (olive oil) as the sauce. We ordered the Francesca as our pizza which consisted of pistachios, red onion, mozzeralla, Parmigiano-Reggiano, rosemary, and olio. I thought it would be a good idea to just use some olive oil at home in the future! I always like to get ideas from restaurants!

Our meal was delicious with quality, locally sourced ingredients.  The service was friendly, knowledgeable, and quick. The atmosphere was cozy, and I loved sitting on the patio. The brick oven inside was beautiful as well. I will go back, and I think it would be interesting to sit at the bar next time.

A Couple Improvements

I do have a couple suggested improvements. One, I thought there could be more vegetable options as sides/ appetizers. The other one was to spread the ingredients out to the edge of the pizza.  I don’t like bites that have just the bread with no toppings. I think it is fine if there is a reasonable amount of crust around the edges. I don’t really expect them to be spread clear to the edge (although that is what I like to do at home!), but I do expect most of the pizza to be covered with toppings. I don’t want the amount of toppings to increase, but I would like them better distributed to the edges. If you go, I would suggest saying you want the toppings spread out and not so much crust around the outer edge.

A Lighter Unique Pizza

The crust is a little bit thinner of a crust so I would take this into account to help you decide how much you want to order as well. To me, the pizza size seemed perfect to share with a friend. One of the reasons I have feared pizza is because of all the grease. This seemed to be a lighter pizza though, so I didn’t feel like I was eating something that had so much extra fat. There was also lots of unique options for ingredients that are not at your typical pizza place.  I think that this pizza place is one of a kind in Wichita and you should go try it out!

Finding Balance

Eating pizza is nothing to freak out about. Calories are energy and our bodies need energy to work effectively. I just try to eat it in moderation just like anything else and choose some veggies to go with it. Sometimes, veggies are not an option though. In this case, life goes on. Be happy, support a local restaurant, and enjoy a little pizza. If you indulge and eat a lot of pizza (which I know happens to me every once in a while), then move on and get right back to balanced living!

Will you try a different pizza place with a friend?

Restaurants Need to make Salads with more Veggies

Making Salads at Home

When I am in the mood for a salad, I love to make it at home because I can load it with all the veggies that I want. This one has mixed greens, cauliflour, carrots, red onion, and a tomato and jalepeno out of my garden. It also has sunflower seeds, chicken, a sprinkling of cheddar cheese, and ranch dressing. Sometimes, I make my own dressing, but it was one of those nights that I just really wanted ranch!

Restaurants Need More Veggies in their Salads

Many restaurants do a horrible job of putting veggies in a salad! Every once in a while a salad sounds good when I go out to eat, but then I look at the salad choices and am usually disappointed by their lack of vegetables.  What restaurants do you know of that have salads with a good serving of veggies? You try to be healthy, but then find out the salads are worse for you than if you ordered something else!

Take Action

If you visit a restaurant, and there are no salads with a good servings of vegetables then leave reviews, and let them know what you want! My husband always tells me if you don’t ASK, you don’t GET! If we want restaurants to change, we have to let them know we want healthier options.

Balanced Diet Tip: I suggest ordering a dressing that you like, but get it on the side! If you try to eat something you don’t like, then you might feel deprived and unsatisfied. If you let them dress it though, they can put on way too much!

Carrots and BBQ Sauce

I love chicken wings and veggie boats and that is how I discovered that carrots and celery are amazing dipped in bbq sauce. I like to do this instead of ranch, hummus, or quacamole… all of which are amazing options as well! I always thought I would be considered strange for dipping carrots in bbq sauce. I went to a Wild Tree party the other night though and found out that I am not the only one that likes to do this! So I thought I would share with everyone!

This Bash Brothers Honey Jalapeno BBQ Sauce is my absolute favorite BBQ Sauce. You should try it if you have never had it, and if you have had it you know what I am talking about!

I also buy this ribs and pork rub from them. I have put it on steak, in hamburgers, and on chicken! It is so versatile and delicious!

I buy these at the Sedgwick County Farmer’s Market. Here is a link to their website where you can find other places it is sold and what sauces and rubs they have!

Enjoy Your Little Unexpected Dessert

Date Nights Meals

I love to go support local businesses. I always am trying to get my husband to go try a new place on Friday night date night. Usually, we do not get desserts on these nights out, and I try to stick to just the meal with no appetizers or extra drinks. Partially because I like to save money, and partially because I know the meals can be loaded with lots of calories and fat. I try to pick good choices, but sometimes, I want something that is not quite as healthy. Many times, I end up taking half of it home as well if it is a big serving. If I pick what I want and eat less of it, I feel more satisfied than ordering something I didn’t want to begin with.

When Pigs Fly Barbecue: An Unexpected Dessert

Turkey Sandwich at When Pigs Fly Bar-B-Que

Tonight, my husband and I went to when Pigs Fly Bar-B-Que, a local restaurant, in Wichita. The atmosphere was full of little pigs flying, and it had a small town appeal to it. There was christian music quietly playing in the background. The service was very quick and friendly, and the staff went above and beyond. We had not been there before, and they gave a little sample plate with all the meats and baked beans to help us decide what we wanted to get. I thought everything was good and ended up getting a 1/4 pound turkey sandwich and my husband got the Bulldozer.

We were pleased with our sandwiches. The coleslaw that I picked was a perfect barbecue side as well. I do wish theyhad some healthier fresh side vegetable options as well though. We did think thbrisket was a little dry, but it was lean and had good flavor. They had a piece of Cruzan Rum Coconut Custard Pie that had part of the crust broken off.  They didn’t want to sell it, so they just gave it to us! We shared it, and it was delicious!

Enjoy Your Little Treat

I was not planning on having any dessert, but the opportunity came up, and I wanted to try it. So I did, and you can, too. Enjoy your little treat if that is what you want. It is better to have a little bit of what you want than to feel deprived and unhappy.

Ate Too Much?

Don’t Punish Yourself

Had some fun last night? Maybe ate too much? Don’t punish yourself today by not eating and or overdoing workouts. It creates an unhealthy relationship with food and exercise. Just get back on track with a balanced breakfast, a normal activity level for you, and continue living your happy balanced life.

Pictured Breakfast:

Scrambled eggs, California veggies, sprinkle of mozzarella cheese, and siracha (Spicy foods can help hold off hunger). I also had wheat toast with butter and Steve’s Habanero Gold Jam from Steve’s Jams and Jellies in Wichita.  I have tried many of their different jams and jellies and have always been pleased!

Steve’s Jams and Jellies:

They always set up at the Sedgwick County Farmer’s Market while it is open.

Eating Out Strategy

This morning I met a friend for brunch at HomeGrown in Wichita. It is based on the idea of community partners. I was very impressed with this new restaurant. The cinnamon French toast was delicious, and it came with fresh strawberries. The atmosphere was appealing with lots of natural light, the service was quick and polite, and the menu had lots of great options! I was amazed by all the fresh choices, and I wish more restaurants would take part in this movement.

HomeGrown did have a lot of options, but I have a strategy that I use when I eat out that helps me make healthier choices and not spend as much money.  This morning is a perfect example. I worked out, and I knew breakfast would be later so I decided I had to have a snack before going. I decided to get online and look at HomeGrown’s menu to see what I thought looked good, so I could choose a snack that would balance my plate. I decided that I would probably get the French toast so I wanted a snack that had some protein. I chose some greek yogurt because it is so high in protein. This strategy reduces my bill at the restaurant. It holds my hunger off, so I do not feel the need to stuff myself when I get there. In addition, I get to eat a balanced meal with a healthy side option of my choice. I will say their fresh protein options were tempting, and I will probably try one next time!
